EyeTV's interface and remote control in depth

Apple Remote Issue with 10.6

Postby samurai boy » August 31st, 2009, 5:53 pm

The UP/Down button on the Apple Remote operates the Mac Volume at the same time. This is very annoying whilst trying to navigate the menu from within the EyeTv application.

Can anyone else confirm this issue?

Some other users have mentioned this issue, and we have reproduced it in our offices.

We don't know if the issue is within EyeTV, OS X 10.6, or some other related element, but we're researching the problem now.

If it's something that is solely controlled by EyeTV, then we hope to have it resolved soon. If the problem lies outside of our code, then a solution may be a bit more challenging.

The silver EyeTV remote that comes with most EyeTV products should not have this problem, so that may be a temporary workaround.

Right now, the issue seems to be affecting many OS X applications, including VLC, Hulu Desktop, Plex, and EyeTV.

Sometimes it preferable referencing information where it's currently active and updated instead of copying something that may get out-of-date and inaccurate.

Elgato may post more details directly here when they're known.

Thanks for the links, Nick.

Those links were intended to support the idea that this remote problem is not confined to EyeTV; it seems to be a broader problem, affecting other software as well.

Hi all,

eyeTv 3.2 is out but the apple remote is still not working properly. I'm assuming the bug is not in eyetv software but rather in snow leopard itself. Did you get any info from apple ? are they aware of the issue ? There are long threads on apple forums regarding this issue, but no official answer has been provided.

thanks

It's my understanding that Apple does not consider it a bug. They say it now behaves like it's supposed to (locking out third-parties from using the remote).

We are still investigating to see what can be done, if anything.

Thanks Mike for the info!

I think apple is playing very dirty with this "feature". This is another apple move I quite dislike and I hope they will have the humility to step back; they did it with firewire and with the non-glossy laptop LCD...
In my opinion many of their recent decisions are rather questionable, this one adds to the list.

I hate to say it but the Snow Leopard update has been rather disappointing. There are not enough improvements and too many negatives. The Apple Remote problem being a major negative. I am actually considering going back to a fresh install of 10.5.x., at least on my Home Theater Mac Mini.

You could start with Remote functionality in your iPhone App as soon as possible ;)

This might be a weird question, but my silver eye tv remote only works if you aim it at the eyetvstick (that is in the back of my imac...) so i have to get up from the couch... go to the imac to be able to aim it at the hybrid.
Why have a remote control if i can't use it at a remote distance?
Is anyone else having the same issue with the silver remote?
