VLC 0.9.2 has built-in EyeTV support (playback/streaming)

Postby Nick Freeman » September 15th, 2008, 8:49 pm

VLC 0.9.2 is now available:

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

It allows users to capture the EyeTV Live TV stream, and either display it, or to transcode it to another format.

See the File menu > Open Capture Device:

Once you install the EyeTV Plugin (a one time event), you can then control EyeTV:

Make sure to turn on "Streaming/Saving" here. Then, use the "Settings..." button to select "Display the stream locally". Now you can watch live TV via VLC, on your local Mac.

Elgato was not involved with this VLC feature at all, so we're not able to support it. However, I'm interested in hearing if users find this new "experimental" integration useful.

If someone can figure out a relatively simple way to plug in streaming settings, then it should mean that you can stream to any computer that has VLC, or compatible network clients.

I did a quick test. The installer installs the plugin in the EyeTV.app plugin directory (not in /Library/Application Support/EyeTV/Plugins/) which will be erased at every EyeTV update.
It also requires that EyeTV.app leaves in the /Applications directory, not in any sub directory (which was my case as it's in /Applications/Video).
So I moved the plugin (after installing it) to /Library/Application Support/EyeTV/Plugins/ and restarted both EyeTV and VLC.
I then followed Nick instruction. It works. But the channel mapping isn't working properly (some channel aren't in the VLC list). Once you select a channel to watch it takes a few second before VLC hides EyeTV and starts displaying the video.
All in all, it works, need to be perfected but this is a more than welcome addition to VLC (and of course EyeTV).

EyeTV wasn't in /Applications for me either. You can still install it through Pacifist though (you need to create the Plugins folder inside the EyeTV application itself though).

Will it be possible to change channels on a Windows machine using VLC? I sure hope so!

I'm not sure how it would work. We're not talking streaming here, but application linking. VLC and EyeTV would be running on different machines so application linking is not going to happen… :-\

CyTV is an alternative solution for streaming, that also uses VLC.

CyTV can let you change channels via most any web browser, including one on Windows.

See this article for links to the latest CyTV software, plus info on tests on the iPhone (jailbroken).

It's a shame, but this CyTV release only showes me the user interface in Firefox on a pc, and the video doesn't start. It hangs at "loading". Changing channels does work, but it pauses the playback on the Mac. It still needs some work.

I just asked about that on the VideoLAN Forums:

Shouldn't this be installed in /Library/Application Support/EyeTV/Plugins instead of in the EyeTV application bundle where it'll be deleted by future EyeTV updates?
