Snow Leopard?

Postby Mike Evangelist » June 15th, 2009, 7:42 pm

We've received a number of inquiries about compatibility of our products with the forthcoming OS X upgrade, Snow Leopard, which Apple plans to release in September.

    • The current versions of our software are not designed to work with pre-release or beta versions of Snow Leopard and most likely will not work properly.
    • We expect EyeTV, the Turbo.264 and Video Capture software to be compatible with Snow Leopard when it is released.
    • If you want to be able to continue to use your Elgato software, we don't recommend installing pre-release versions of Snow Leopard.

When our software is revised to work with Snow Leopard, we will make announcements here and elsewhere to that effect.

I don't get it. Don't you all get the betas from Apple, like 10.5.8 that's due out any day now? I'd imagine Elgato would have tremendous pull in the Apple Developer community, since you've made great Mac software forever it seems. Why aren't the EyeTV releases ready when the new operating systems come out?

Huh? That contradicts what Mike said:

• We expect EyeTV, the Turbo.264 and Video Capture software to be compatible with Snow Leopard when it is released.
(emphasis added)

Snow Leopard is still a pre-release, currently only legally available to at least ADC Select members and not intended for regular usage, so it's there's no necessity for Elgato to make ensure their hardware/software is compatible with SL now.

Mike went back & forth with that assertion, but, I'm going off of history really. It's never ready with the OS release. Remember the QuickTime 7 snafu? I just don't get why there has to be a lag.

It doesn't make sense (to me) to do an OS upgrade unless/until third party software you rely is supported on it. I think some people (myself included, at times) exaggerate the urgency to do OS and other software/hardware upgrades. :)

Mike,
Can you elaborate on weather we can expect to see things like GPU accel and Grand Central being leveraged by EyeTV for performance enhancements under Snow Leopard?
I just replaced my 1.83 core duo mini with a 2.0 C2D early 2009 model with the nVidia chip so I am really hoping to see not only hardware performance gains now but further gains in the future one Snow Leopard is released.
Thanks for keeping us all informed.

As the release date of Snow Leopard gets closer I also am curious to know if you will be incorporating the new technologies available in 10.6 as it is released, or if you will wait a while until a larger number of users have upgraded to the newer version before moving forward with the new abilities of the operating system?

We have successfully tested EyeTV 3.1.2 with beta builds of 10.6 - all features working as expected - but we can't say it's "fully compatible" until the final version of 10.6 is available this week, and examined in our office.

We'll have a final report a few days after 10.6 is released, if not a lot sooner. We'll let everyone know via the usual means (forum, Knowledgebase, Twitter).

Any chance h.264 HW decoding will be working with 10.6 using the supported 9400M videocard?
