What's new in EyeTV 3.1:

===================================

TV Guide Electronic Programming Guide (EPG) for the United States and Canada

EyeTV 3.1 introduces a new electronic programming guide for North American users: TV Guide, provided by Macrovision Solutions Corporation. The TV Guide EPG features:

* 14 days of guide data
* Rich cast, ratings and genre information for many programs
* Episode information for many series, enabling EyeTV’s new Smart Series Guide feature (see below)
* Pictures (coming soon)

One year of EPG service is included for new and all existing EyeTV 3 users. After that, an additional year of service is available for US$ 19.95.

For first time EyeTV users, TV Guide is the only EPG available in the Setup Assistant for the US & Canada.

Existing EyeTV 3 users who already have a TitanTV EPG setup and upgrade to EyeTV 3.1 may opt to continue to use TitanTV as their EPG provider. At a later date, but no later than December 31, 2010, TV Guide will become the sole EPG provider for EyeTV.

To switch the EPG to TV Guide, please run the EyeTV Setup Assistant, including a new auto-tune, to create your TV Guide account. This will clear your existing guide data and the download of the new TV Guide data will begin. To take advantage of the new Smart Series Guide feature (see below), wait for the download to complete.

Remote Scheduling is currently not available via TV Guide. Users in the United States can use Remote Scheduling via a free TitanTV.com account. To create a TitanTV.com account, go to TitanTV.com and click the Signup link.

===================================

Smart Series Guides

It’s easy to record entire seasons of your favorite shows with EyeTV 3.1’s new Smart Series Guides. All shows on the same channel which are part of the same series are recorded automatically. This feature is currently supported with the tvtv and TV Guide EPGs.

To create a Smart Series Guide, click the Record All button at the bottom of the program’s EPG details view.

Creating a Smart Series Guide automatically creates a corresponding Smart Playlist. Once created, a Smart Series Guide works like any other Smart Guide. To preview the upcoming episodes that will be recorded, click the Smart Series Guide in the sidebar.

===================================

EPG Search By Genre

EyeTV 3.1 features a custom search criteria for program genres, to make it easier to find similar shows. This feature is currently supported with the tvtv and TV Guide EPGs.

===================================

Parental Controls

To help parents protect their children from objectionable content, EyeTV 3.1 adds support for Parental Controls.

What are Parental Controls?

Television programs often are transmitted with age and content based ratings attached, or have an associated rating from the Electronic Programming Guide. Parental Controls allow parents to block specific content, individually for each Mac OS X user account on their computer, by setting a maximum allowed rating, and by blocking certain channels.

Parental Controls can be overridden by entering a PIN. If you're using Parental Controls for the first time, the default PIN is 0000 (all zeros). You should change that by selecting a new PIN. Press the Change PIN... button, and enter a new 4 digit combination.

Note that the Parental Controls feature does not work with pre-existing recordings.

Which Ratings Systems does EyeTV support?

By default, EyeTV will will select the appropriate ratings system, based on the user’s location. If EyeTV is not able to determine the ratings information from the TV video stream, it will use the associated ratings information from the EPG (if available).

USA — EyeTV supports the broadcast TV and the MPAA ratings systems. Most broadcast and cable TV programs in the US contain a TV rating.

Canada — Canadian users can choose between English and French versions of the Canadian TV ratings system.

Europe — For European users, EyeTV uses the Age rating contained in DVB video streams.

If you receive television via the analog output of a set top box, the video stream may not always contain ratings information — we recommend using the set top box’s Parental Controls feature for best protection.

How do I block certain channels with Parental Controls?

For added protection, Parental Controls features a whitelist to restrict the channels that can be watched.

By default, all channels start out as unchecked. Select the channels you want to allow your child to watch. You can use the search field at the top right of this window to narrow down the channel list.

How can I export recordings when using Parental Controls?

When Parental Controls are on, manual exports will be blocked, unless you enter the PIN for one-time access. A window asking for the PIN will appear when you select the Export command.

Automatic exports associated with Wi-Fi Access will still occur, even when Parental Controls are active.

Automatic exports associated with manual or repeated schedules require entering the PIN.

===================================

Hardware Support

Support has been added for the following devices:

• The 2009 North American version of EyeTV Hybrid, a USB stick that supports ATSC digital television, Clear QAM unencrypted digital cable television, and NTSC analog television, as well as FM Radio.

• The Hauppauge HD PVR, a capture device with component video and analog and S/PDIF optical audio inputs. This device requires a Macintosh computer with an Intel processor. The infrared remote receiver is not supported. The infrared remote blaster cannot legally be supported on the Macintosh. The minimum firmware supported is 1.15, and must be flashed on a PC using Hauppauge’s driver software.

Bug Fixes

General

Fixed a bug where a manual schedule's start time could be late by several seconds, causing late recordings and/or scheduling conflicts.

A problem where scheduling conflicts were not reported after editing a scheduled recording has been corrected.

Fixed a problem that could lead to a crash when adding schedules or Smart Guides in the EPG via the contextual menu.

Channel list on non-admin accounts are now saved correctly.

Hardware

Fixed a crash when manually adding a DVB-C channel with specific parameters.

Fixed a problem where EyeTV CI did not recover from sleep when using a Mac mini.

Fixed a bug with the IR Remote navigation when the Caps Lock key was enabled.

What does this concrete mean? What has changed from what into what?
Channel list on non-admin accounts are now saved WHERE? Systemwide below /Library/Application Support/EyeTV/Shared or per user below ~/Library/Application Support/EyeTV ? How are the concrete user/group/file permissions and locations of the channellists (better: all EyeTV files)?

For those of us who were beta testing...how will you reset the 1-year free counter for TVGuide? I am using the released 3.1 final and it shows that TVGuide will expire on 29Nov08...the day I installed the first beta.

Thanks,

EyeTV 3.1 problem with 250 plus -- Fixed with build 4513

Postby dewtx » January 19th, 2009, 11:56 pm

I just upgraded my version of EyeTV software from 3.0.4 to 3.1, and now with version 3.1 my EyeTV 250 plus cannot pickup any of my digital channels. If I run version 3.0.4 (which I fortunately did not delete from my trash), my 250 plus works fine (as it was just before the update). Using version 3.1, my 250 plus can display channels when I switch to analog, but when I switch back to digital I get the "No Signal" on a black background for every one of my digital channels. Any ideas?

I read about similar problems with the 250 plus using the 3.1 beta, I didn't see where there was any solution to the problem. So I figured it was taken care of in the final release version.

The only thing I have done so far is quit and restart the EyeTV 3.1 software several times and disconnect all connections to my 250 plus, wait a bit, and then reconnect. I haven't deleted any EyeTV preference files, mainly because I'll continue to use version 3.0.4 until this glitch with 3.1 is resolved.
---------------------------------------------------
This problem is now fixed in the latest 4513 build of EyeTV 3.1. Many thanks to Nick and everyone at El Gato.

Hopefully Elgato will accommodate us. In another post I wrote:

Wish I hadn't started the first year of free TV Guide service by creating an account last November. Feeling penalized for being a beta tester.

With TV Guide's long lists of additional details it's more often necessary to scroll the episode info pane to reveal any buttons at the bottom, e.g.:

Episode%20Info.png

IMO, the buttons should be visible/clickable without scrolling.

Our goal is to reset the expiration date for any beta users.

We're looking into this now - I don't know how easy/hard it will be, but I suspect you'll see this reset soon. If there's any hitch we'll let you know.

I apologize for this .. but I got my HD-PVR in the mail today and upgraded to EyeTV 3.1 .. but do I still need a PC to install the HD-PVR on my computer? Do I just disregard the CD that came with the HD-PVR or what?

Sorry if this has been answered before ..

Elgato hasn't considered this bug important enough to fix in 3.1 (4511):

When details for a scheduled recording are edited (with Edit Schedule…) the changes aren't saved until EyeTV is cleanly quit and will otherwise be lost.

[That's a simpler and more accurate description than I originally posted]

WTF???

So, at some unknown time in the future, but by 12/31/2010 at the latest, we are going to HAVE to PAY for something that we have been getting for FREE? How is this a good thing? What if we are completely satisfied with TitanTV? TV Guide can't even do remote scheduling, so is arguably inferior (at the moment.)

This really stinks if you ask me. And you've got a lot of nerve to be promoting it as a free "upgrade". There is NOTHING about this that I consider an upgrade.

You guys really do seem to be trying to ram this down peoples throats. There's no reason for excluding new users from using TitanTV except for leaving them with the impression that they aren't being artificially excluded from other options.

Skeptical people will speculate why EyeTV and elgato are doing this and one assumes it involves either payments or a future deal planned with TV Guide either way it leaves a bad taste in the mouth of new and existing customers.

I am extremely frustrated as a customer of EyeTV to see them abandoning support for TitanTV! The reason that I purchased EyeTV was to eliminate subscription fees for TV.

Now you are introducing a subscription based fee upon your customers for a third-party product. What is the next item that you will make me pay for to use your product? In the future will I have to pay to have my recordings exported, will you automatically delete my recordings, will you be evil?

Seems that if I buy your software, then I should be entitled to use it WITHOUT any other subscription accounts and such.

A move like this is simply evil.

-HAiRY (once a happy EyeTV customer, hopefully a happy customer in the future (assuming they fix their new poor feature))

I just installed the new update, and my EyeTV preferences now indicate that my TVGuide account is active until January 20, 2010. Looks like the counter has already been reset.

I get the error message "An update is already in progress?" but there is none. More important is the problem with the replicating Smart Guides solved in this version.

this update broke sharing completely. i tried the EyeConnect Uninstall 1.0, but it didn't restore sharing for me. i had to roll back to 3.04 and then run that script.

Re TV Guide vs. TitanTV:

Thank God. TitanTV is the most awful EPG service I've ever used. Even when I was at Western Carolina University this past summer, I actually had to MANUALLY record my favourite game shows on GSN, which became a humongous pain in the *****, and not only that, TitanTV didn't recognize the channel lineup, so I had to create the channel lineup MANUALLY too. It's only NOW that they "got around to" seeing that WCU's cable was a COMPLETELY different beast than Mediacom in Franklin/Sylva.

I'm really happy you have left those bastards, and you've got yourselves a happy upgrader to 3.1 in a week or so, when the download becomes available (I'd rather upgrade to the 3.1 straight up).
