Hidden FrontRow Menu Item in EyeTV

Postby MacPlus » February 1st, 2008, 7:05 pm

I learned a very interesting trick today. If you execute this command in the Terminal:

defaults write com.elgato.eyetv "apple remote menu button behavior" -int 1

EyeTV's prefs will be modified and there will be a 'FrontRow' item added to the 'More' menu.

See -

It also switches the behavior of the 'Menu' button on the Apple remote so that a single press brings up EyeTV and a long press brings up FrontRow.

Why, you dirty dog! Awesome find, MacPlus—certainly befitting of your Lounge user ID number and post count. A man of few words, but each word sure counts. :D

If Elgato doesn't pull it, this will be great for all those users who don't have Remote Buddy or the like but want consistent Menu button behavior (I'm looking at you, vtdarryl!).

I can't help but wonder if this should be kept low profile, I mean there is a reason that this hasn't been made a user option after all...

Either way absolutely brilliant find, well done MacPlus.

Perfect!!! This is just what I need... The transition between EyeTV and FR could be nicer but for now this fills all my HTMac needs. :D

I don't get it. So it takes you to Front Row. What am I missing? I can do this with the Apple Remote.

More importantly it swaps the functionality of the 'Menu' button click/click and hold. Which altogether makes it more consistent. The menu item is unnecessary but makes it feel more integrated.

I'm curious if this still works in 3.0.1? Think I'll give it a try on my "beta" machine and see if it does...

Sweet trick, thanks... it works in 3.0.1 too.

Didn't work on a iMac 24" late 2006 model that has the 7600-GT in it. I'll have to reinstall 3.0.1 again and retry it again later.

Developers.. can you integrate this into 3.0.2 ? At the very least have a setting to change the Menu 'press' functionality in the EyeTV properties...

Darn, doesn't work here :|

EDIT: However, it does work on the old laptop I use as a media server, and that's more important :)

Well, for one thing, once Front Row is open I can now keep using my *EyeTV* remote to navigate Front Row. I'm sure that didn't work before...

Hi there,

This crashes my EyeTV ver. 3.0.1 when I hold down the menu button to bring up front row!

Anyone else get this?

It still works just fine in 3.0.2 and I might add that I'm not sure what happened during the 3.0.1 release but, it became stable so that it doesn't crash anymore when switching back and forth. It could have been after I did a "fresh" install of 3.0.

execute this command in the Terminal:
defaults write com.elgato.eyetv "apple remote menu button behavior" -int 1

It is not working for me. When I hit the Menu entry for front row,
the TV-Stream "pauses", but Front row is not opening :(

When I then open Front Row manually, by double clicking the Front Row
Application in Finder it opens up and I can control it by using the Remote
of my TV-Card. When I the close Front row it automatically returns to EyeTV
and starts LiveTV again.

So it is just Problem of launching Front Row.

Maybe someone could give me hint what to do about that.
Is there a script which is triggered by hitting the Front Row Menu
and could this script be modified?

If someone could help me about that it would be great, thanks.

Can anyone confirm (esp. the behaviour change) that this still works in 10.5.7? I cannot get it working.

It does not work for me either. It seems that frontrow in snow leopard does not switch to the "long press menu button behaviour". Does anyone have a solution for that?

Snow Leopard apparently made a number of undocumented changes to the way the Apple remote works, which we are investigating. Not sure at the moment, what if anything, we'll be able to do about it.

Any news on the OSX 10.6 & Apple Remote with EyeTV 3.2??

I'm still running OSX 10.5 on my HomeTheaterMac as 10.6 seems to break Apple Remote feature on EyeTV which I really need...

Agree, will we (the ones that thought that upgrading to snow leopard was a good idea) need to downgrade or will elgato find a way?
